Define the covered offer and contribution
Name the exact offer covered by the arrangement, including a meaningful version or price distinction when several products look similar. “All creator revenue” is usually too broad to audit. State whether the share applies to a course, cohort, service package, membership, upsell, renewal, or only a named launch. If an operator works on one funnel while the creator sells through several paths, describe which paths are included and which are out of scope. Include what happens when the offer is renamed, repriced, bundled, or replaced during the term.
Then describe the operator’s contribution without assuming contribution equals ownership of every sale. The work might include a launch funnel, email sequence, landing page, tracking setup, sales enablement, or ongoing optimization. This explanation helps the parties decide whether attribution should be tied to a specific path, a campaign, a period, or an agreed record rather than to a vague feeling that someone helped. Write down what happens when the operator improves shared infrastructure used by more than one offer; that case is common enough to deserve an answer.
- Offer name, version, price, currency, and included upsells or renewals.
- Covered channel and path, such as a named landing page, email sequence, webinar, or referral code.
- Operator deliverables and the point at which the attribution arrangement begins.
- Excluded offers, channels, affiliates, prior customers, and unrelated services.
Choose a window and a source of truth
A measurement window makes the arrangement finite and reviewable. It may start when the agreed funnel goes live, when a tracked lead opts in, or after a defined launch event, and it should state when attribution expires. Decide how a purchase is handled when the first interaction occurs before the window, the sale occurs after it, or a buyer returns through a different link. There is no universal answer; the useful answer is the one both parties can apply consistently. A stated window also prevents a temporary launch responsibility from quietly becoming a perpetual claim on later work.
Name the reporting system and the fields that will be used to reconcile it. One source may show the order and refund, another may show the tracking event, and a third may show the payout. Agree who can inspect each source, how often a report is shared, and which date controls: order date, successful payment date, fulfillment date, or another defined event. Keep a versioned report or change log so a later correction does not silently rewrite the history. A report should make an individual order traceable without requiring either party to trust an unexplained total.
- Start date, end date, attribution expiry, and any review or renewal date.
- Primary order record plus the supporting campaign, referral, or customer identifier.
- Report cadence, access rights, responsible preparer, and reconciliation deadline.
- Process for correcting a duplicate, missing event, late payment, or changed order status.
Define the share base and normal adjustments
Write the calculation in words and in a simple worked example. Specify whether the base is gross receipts, collected receipts, or another agreed amount, and state how discounts, taxes, processing charges, refunds, chargebacks, credits, payment plans, and currency conversion are treated. Avoid relying on labels such as “net” unless the deal lists what is deducted. An example should use fictional amounts only to explain the formula, not to imply a forecast. Have each person independently calculate that example; disagreement at this stage is useful information.
Timing matters as much as arithmetic. A payment plan may create several collection events; a refund may happen after a share was paid; a failed payment may later succeed. Decide whether adjustments are netted from the next report, carried as a balance, or handled through another agreed process. Keep platform fees or other third-party charges separate from the negotiated creator/operator formula unless the parties expressly include them. State who bears a temporary negative balance and when it is reviewed, so a correction does not become an indefinite informal debt.
If two people can follow the written formula and reach different numbers, pause the deal conversation and resolve the definition before discussing percentages.
Reconcile edge cases without turning the relationship adversarial
List likely edge cases while the relationship is calm: a buyer uses a direct checkout after reading the operator-built page, a creator closes a sale in a private conversation, two campaigns touch the same buyer, an affiliate also receives credit, or a customer changes products. Decide which evidence controls and whether the answer is “included,” “excluded,” or “requires review.” Do not invent certainty where the records cannot establish it. An honest “unattributed pending review” state is safer than assigning credit simply because a report must be delivered.
Set a short dispute and correction path that is operational rather than accusatory. One person prepares the report, the other raises a specific question with the relevant order or event, and both review the same records by an agreed date. Keep the deal language separate from legal or tax advice: a contract professional and accountant can help assess obligations that depend on the parties, jurisdiction, and business structure. Source-E does not decide a private compensation dispute or guarantee a result. If the records remain inconclusive, document the agreed fallback and improve the tracking process instead of arguing from memory.
- Keep an exceptions log with the order, issue, evidence reviewed, decision, and date.
- Use a defined fallback when tracking is missing instead of retroactively guessing intent.
- State when a correction appears and how it affects an already-paid amount.
- Review the arrangement at the agreed milestone rather than changing the rules mid-report.
Before you move forward
- The covered offer, version, channel, and operator contribution are named.
- The attribution window and controlling date are explicit.
- The share base lists discounts, taxes, fees, refunds, chargebacks, and payment plans.
- Reports have a source of truth, access plan, cadence, and correction process.
- Edge cases and the path to professional legal or tax advice are acknowledged.
